Onion tomato chutney recipe
Onion tomato chutney is a very delicious accompaniment for idlis, dosas and other South Indian snacks. It is very easy and simple to make and it can be stored in refrigerator upto 3 days.
Ingredients
- Onions - 4 (finely chopped)
- Tomatoes - 4 (finely chopped)
- Whole red chillies - 3 to 4
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon (chopped finely)
- Salt to taste
- FOR TEMPERING
- Oil - 2 teaspoons
- Mustard seeds/rai - 1/2 teaspoon
- 1 string of curry leaves
- Urad dal - 1/2 teaspoon
Method
Step 1
HOW TO MAKE ONION TOMATO CHUTNEY RECIPE Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a pan. Add red chillies and ginger and stir fry for 2 minutes on a low flame
Step 2
Add the finely chopped onions and fry for another 2 minutes till they become translucent.
Step 3
Then add tomatoes and cook till they become soft.
Step 4
Add salt and mix well. Remove from heat.
Step 5
Let the mixture cool down. Grind the mixture to a slightly coarse paste.
Step 6
Heat another 2 teaspoons of oil in a tadka pan. Add mustard seeds. Once the seeds stops spluttering add urad dal and curry leaves and fry till dal becomes light brown. Add this seasoning to the chutney.
Step 7
Onion-tomato chutney is ready to be served.

I add 2 tbsp of Chanadal for initial frying. This will give better consistency.
