Chana dal sundal recipe

Chana dal is a healthy snack which is prepared during Navaratri.  It is called as kadalai paruppu sundal in Tamil Nadu.  Different types of sundals are prepared during Navaratri.  Navaratri is a festival which is celebrated for nine days.  Navaratri means nine nights in Sanskrit and during these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Devi are worshipped.  Varieties types of sundals are prepared and served as an offering to God.  Chana dal sundal is a healthy snack which can be prepared quickly.  It is made with chana dal or bengal gram which is boiled and seasoned with spices.

Ingredients

  • Chana dal / Bengal gram - 1 cup
  • Turmeric powder - a pinch
  • Cooking oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Urad dal - 1/2 teaspoon
  • 1 string of curry leaves
  • Green chillies - 2 (finely chopped)
  • Whole red chilly - 1 (broken into 2 or 3 pieces)
  • Salt to taste
  • Grated coconut - 2 tablespoons
  • A pinch of asafoetida

Method

Step 1

HOW TO MAKE CHANA DAL SUNDAL RECIPE Wash and soak chana dal for half an hour with sufficient water.

Step 2

After half an hour, add salt and turmeric powder to soaked chanadal and pressure cook upto 2 whistles. Do not overcook the chana dal otherwise it becomes too mushy and soft.

Step 3

Once the pressure cools down, strain the water from the boiled chana dal completely and keep aside.

Step 4

Heat a non-stick pan and add oil. Once the oil is little hot, add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds start spluttering, add asafoetida, urad dal, curry leaves, green chillies and red chillies and saute on a low flame for one minute.

Step 5

Once the urad dal turns golden brown, add boiled chana dal and salt and mix well. Then add grated coconut and combine together. Switch off the flame

Step 6

Chana dal sundal is ready to be served as an offering/neivedhyam to God.
