Poha chivda or aval mixture – easy diwali snacks recipe
Poha chivda or aval mixture is a very popular and healthy snack made of thin beaten rice and flavoured with peanuts, roasted chana dal and mild spices. It can be prepared instantly and can be enjoyed as a tea time snack. Poha chivda is a also a very common snack prepared during Diwali festival. It is a low fat snack which can be easily prepared at home. It does not use too much oil and can be easily stored in an airtight container upto one month.
Ingredients
- Thin Poha or beaten rice - 2 cups
- Oil - 2 tablespoons
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Green chillies - 1 to 2 (finely chopped)
- 1 string of curry leaves
- Whole raw peanuts - 1/4 cup
- Roasted chana dal (daliya) - 1/4 cup
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
- Sugar - 1 teaspoon
- Dry coconut - 1 tablespoon (sliced into small pieces)
- Salt to taste
Method
Step 1
HOW TO MAKE POHA CHIVDA OR AVAL MIXTURE RECIPE Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan on a low flame. Add thin poha and roast till it becomes crisp. Keep aside
Step 2
In the same pan, add another 1 tablespoon of oil. Add mustard seeds. Once it stops spluttering, add cumin seeds. Cook till it becomes light brown.
Step 3
Add green chillies, curry leaves, dry coconut pieces, roasted chana dal and peanuts. Stir fry on a low flame till they become light brown in colour
Step 4
Add turmeric powder and salt and mix well. Add roasted poha and combine together and cook on a low heat for another 1 minute by stirring continously and mixing well. Switch off the flame.
Step 5
Add sugar and mix it well. Once cooled down completely, transfer poha chivda in an airtight container. It stays good for upto a month.
