Dal fry recipe

Dal fry is a popular north indian dish made with lentils and fried spices. It usually has a medium to thick consistency. Quick and easy to make, dal fry serves as a great side dish for rotis, parathas and rice. Dal fry is generally made with arhar or toor dal, but can also be made with masoor dal or yellow moong dal.

Ingredients

  • Tur dal - 1 cup
  • Onion - 1 (chopped finely)
  • Tomato - 1 (chopped finely)
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 teaspoon
  • Green chillies - 3 nos (chopped finely)
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Few coriander leaves
  • Kasoori methi (dry fenugreek leaves) - 1 teaspoon
  • Ghee - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

HOW TO MAKE DAL FRY RECIPE Wash and soak tur dal for half an hour.

Step 2

Boil the dal with sufficient water. Add turmeric powder to water and cook till soft. Alternatively, you can pressure cook the dal upto 4 whistles. Once cooked, mash the dal and set aside.

Step 3

Heat ghee in a kadai. Add mustard seeds. Once it splutters, add cumin seeds. Stir fry for 30 seconds.

Step 4

Add ginger-garlic paste, green chillies and onions. Stir fry till onions become transluscent.

Step 5

Add chopped tomatoes and cook till they become soft.

Step 6

Add salt, coriander powder and garam masala and mix well.

Step 7

Add boiled dal and little water and cook for 5 to 6 minutes till you get a medium consistency. Crush the kasoori methi by hand and add to the dal. Remove from heat and pour in a serving bowl.

Step 8

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve dal fry hot with rotis, parathas or rice. IMG_4097
