INGREDIENTS

Whole urad dal or black gram – 1/2 cup

Cooking oil – 2 tablespoons

Mustard seeds or rai – 1/2 teaspoon

A pinch of asafoetida or hing

Split urad dal – 1/2 teaspoon

Green chillies –  2 (finely chopped)

Ginger or adrak – 1 inch piece (grated)

Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon

Curry leaves – 10

Salt to taste

Grated coconut – 3 tablespoons

HOW TO MAKE OR PREPARE BLACK GRAM SUNDAL RECIPE

Soak the urad dal for 5-6 hours.  Then drain the water completely.  Add more water and salt and pressure cook for 2-3 whistles.  Once the pressure cools down, drain the excess water and keep it aside.

Heat a pan with oil on medium flame.  Add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter.  Add split urad dal, green chillies, grated ginger and curry leaves.  Saute till the urad dal turns light brown colour.

Add the cooked urad dal, turmeric powder and salt.  Mix well.

Lastly add grated coconut and mix well again.  Switch off the flame.

Healthy and tasty urad dal sundal is ready to be served.

NOTES/TIPS

Do not overcook the dal or make it mushy.

Garnish with chopped coriander leaves for more flavour.
