Whole green moong curry

Whole green moong curry is a very healthy and delicious curry which goes well with rotis as well as rice.  It is very easy and quick to make and very nutritious too.  Whole green moong also known as green gram has a high fiber and nutrient content.  It is also a good source of proteins and iron.  This curry is made onions and tomatoes and  mild spices.

Ingredients

  • Whole green moong - 2 cups
  • Cooking oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin(jeera) seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • 1 string of curry leaves
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • Red chilli powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt to taste
  • TO GRIND
  • Onion - 2 nos (medium size)
  • Tomatoes - 2 nos (medium size)
  • Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Garlic cloves - 10 nos

Method

Step 1

HOW TO MAKE WHOLE GREEN MOONG CURRY Wash whole green gram thoroughly and pressure cook with sufficient water for upto 4 whistles. Once cooked the moong will become little soft. Do not make it too mushy.

Step 2

Grind onions, tomatoes, coconut and garlic cloves with little water to make a smooth paste. Keep aside. (onion tomato mixture)

Step 3

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. Once the seeds start spluttering, add cumin seeds and stir fry till it changes the colour.

Step 4

Add asafoetida, curry leaves, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and fry for few seconds on a low flame.

Step 5

Add ground onion tomato mixture and mix well. Add little water according to consistency required and cook on a medium flame for 5 minutes till the raw smell goes away.

Step 6

Add cooked green moong and boil for 8 to 10 minutes on a low flame stirring in between. Adjust the water accordingly to consistency required.

Step 7

Add garam masala powder and mix well. Cook for another 2 minutes. Switch off the flame

Step 8

Serve whole green moong curry hot with rotis or rice.
