Green peas sundal is a popular south indian sundal recipe made with dry green peas. It is commonly prepared during Navratri festival. Green peas sundal is also a healthy snack as peas are full of proteins and low in calories. It is called as pattani sundal in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and sometimes sold as a street snack in Chennai. INGREDIENTS
Dry green peas – 1/2 cup
Green chillies – 2
Red chillies – 2
Mustard seeds or rai – 1/4 teaspoon
Cumin seeds or jeera – 1/4 teaspoon
A pinch of asafoetida or hing
Turmeric powder – a pinch
Curry leaves – 10
Grated coconut – 2 tablespoons
Salt to taste
Cooking oil – 1 tablespoon
HOW TO MAKE OR PREPARE GREEN PEAS SUNDAL RECIPE
Wash the green peas well. Then soak them with enough water for 7-8 hours or overnight. Next day pressure cook the peas with little water and salt for upto 4 whistles.
Once the pressure cools down, drain the water and keep the cooked peas aside.
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once the seeds stops spluttering, add cumin seeds and saute till light brown in colour.
Add hing, green chillies, red chillies and curry leaves and saute for a minute on low flame. Then add the cooked peas and salt. Mix well. Stir fry for another 2-3 minutes till the mixture becomes dry.
Finally add grated coconut and give a good mix. Switch off the flame.
Tasty green peas is ready to be served as a neivedyam or navaratri dish or as a plain snack.
NOTES/TIPS
You can use coconut oil instead of regular oil for an enhanced flavour.
Ensure not to overcook the green peas or too mushy.
