INGREDIENTS
Tomatoes – 4 (finely chopped)
Onions – 2 (finely chopped)
Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Coriander powder – 1 teaspoon
Garam masala – 1/2 teaspoon (optional)
Red chilli powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing
Salt to taste
TO BE GROUND TO A PASTE
Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
Green chillies – 2
Garlic cloves – 3-4
Ginger – 1 inch small piece
Fried gram dal/pottukadalai – 2 tablespoons
TO TEMPER/SEASONING
Cooking oil – 2 tablespoons
Cumin seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
Fennel seeds/sombu – 1/2 teaspoon
Cloves – 2
Cinnamon – 1 inch piece
Bay leaf -1
HOW TO MAKE OR PREPARE TOMATO KURMA OR THAKKALI KURMA RECIPE
Grind the grated coconut, green chillies, garlic cloves, ginger and fried gram dal with little water to a smooth paste. Keep it aside.
Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds, fennel seeds, cloves, cinnamon and bay leaf and saute for half a minute on a low flame till you get a nice aroma. Add chopped onions and saute till light golden brown.
Add chopped tomatoes and cook on a low to medium flame till the tomatoes become soft. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chilli powder and garam masala and mix well. Then add ground coconut paste and combine together.
Add little water if required and adjust the consistency as required by you. Simmer for 7-8 minutes on a low flame.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with chapatis, idli, dosa, idiyappam or appam.
