Beans palya (French beans foogath)

French beans cooked with coconut, cumin seeds and red chillies. It is served as an accompaniment for rice.


  • French beans - 500 gms
  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Urad dal - 1 teaspoon
  • Chana dal - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 string of curry leaves
  • Oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Whole red chillies - 4 nos
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon


Step 1

Wash and chop french beans into small pieces and set aside.

Step 2

Grind grated coconut, cumin seeds and red chillies to a smooth paste without adding water.

Step 3

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. Allow it to splutter.

Step 4

Add urad dal, chana dal and fry till light brown.

Step 5

Add french beans, turmeric powder, curry leaves, salt and enough water.

Step 6

Mix thoroughly and close the pan with a lid.

Step 7

Cook on a medium flame, till the french beans are fully cooked and all the water is fully absorbed by the vegetable.

Step 8

Add ground coconut mixture and mix well.

Step 9

Cook for another 2 minutes on a low flame

Step 10

Serve hot with rice.
