Green peas idli recipe – How to make green peas idli (hare matar idli) recipe – healthy breakfast recipes

Green peas idli is an instant idli recipe made with green peas, semolina, curd and tempered with seeds, spices and cashewnuts.  This recipe is very similar to rava idli recipe, except for the green peas paste added to it.  Green peas added not only makes the idli nutritious but also gives a nice bright green colour to it.

Green peas are a rich source of fiber and essential nutrients like vitamins C, K and B complex. They provide antioxidant and anti inflammatory benefits and are extremely low in fat. Green peas are small, spherical and greenish in colour with a crunchy texture and a sweet flavour.

This recipe is an instant idli recipe as it requires just 15 to 20 minutes to rest the batter and make idlis immediately.  There are many variation of idli such as sambar idli, rava idli, masala idli and mini idlis and healthy idlis like green peas idli and carrot idli.  Matar or green peas idli is an ideal and light breakfast for mornings and best served with sambar or coconut chutney.

6 to 7 idlis

INGREDIENTS

Green peas – 1/2 cup

Green chillies – 2 nos

Ginger or adrak – 1/2 inch small piece

Chopped coriander leaves – 2 tablespoons

Semolina or rava – 1/2 cup

Curd – 1/2 cup

Eno fruit salt – 1/2 tsp

Salt to taste

FOR SEASONING

Oil – 2 tablespoons

Mustard seeds or rai – 1/2 tsp

Urad dal – 1/2 tsp

Cashewnuts – 10 nos

Few curry leaves

A pinch of asafoetida

HOW TO MAKE OR PREPARE GREEN PEAS IDLI RECIPE

In a mixer grinder, add 1/2 cup green peas, 2 green chillies, 2 tablespoons coriander leaves and 1/2 inch ginger piece.  Add 2 tablespoons of water and grind to a fine paste.  Keep it aside.

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil on medium flame.  Add mustard seeds, urad dal, cashewnuts, curry leaves and hing.  Roast till the dals turn light golden brown in color.  Then add 1/2 cup of rava or semolina.  Roast for another 2 minutes on low flame.  Switch off the flame.

Let the mixture cool down completely.  Once cooled down, add 1/2 cup curd and give a good mix.

Then add the green peas paste and salt and mix everything well.

Add 1/2 cup of water or as required and adjust the consistency of the batter.  Let the batter rest for 15 minutes.  Finally add 1/2 tsp of eno fruit salt and mix well.

Grease the idli mould  with little oil and pour the mixture in each blocks.  Steam cook for 8-10 minutes with the help of a idli cooker.

Once done, let it cool down completely.  Remove the idlis with a spoon or a fork.

Serve green peas idli hot with coconut chutney or sambar or any other chutney of your choice.

NOTES/TIPS

If you do not have Eno fruit salt, you can add 1 tsp of baking soda.
You can add grated carrot or any vegetable of your choice to make it more nutritious and colourful.
After adding eno salt, make idlis immediately.
Do not skip coriander leaves as it gives a nice flavor to the idli.
