Godi payasa or broken wheat kheer or dalia kheer

Broken wheat has got lot of health benefits.  It helps in controlling cholesterol, diabetes and blood pressure.  It is a very healthy and delicious indian dessert.


  • Broken wheat - 1/2 cup
  • Milk - 1 1/2 cups
  • Water - 1 cup
  • Grated jaggery - 1 cup
  • Cashew nuts - 10
  • Raisins - 10
  • Ghee - 2 tablespoons
  • Cardamom powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Saffron strings - a pinch


Step 1

Heat 1 tablespoon of ghee in a pan. Roast broken wheat on a low flame for 6 to 7 minutes till the raw smell goes away. Keep aside

Step 2

In the same pan, add another 1 tablespoon of ghee. Add cashewnuts and stir fry till golden. Then add raisins. Stir fry for 10 seconds and set aside.

Step 3

Pressure cook the roasted broken wheat with 11/2 cups of milk and 1 cup of water till 4 to 5 whistles

Step 4

Heat a heavy bottomed vessel. Add grated jaggery and little water. Once the jaggery water starts boiling, add cooked broken wheat.

Step 5

Cook for 7 to 8 minutes by stirring in between and bring to a thick consistency

Step 6

Dissolve saffron strings in 2 tablespoons of milk for 10 to 15 minutes. Then add to the kheer and combine together

Step 7

Add cardamom powder, fried cashew nuts and raisins and mix well.

Step 8

Serve warm or chilled.
