Green peas subzi recipe – How to make dried green peas sabzi recipe – side dish for rotis

Green peas subzi is a delicious Indian recipe which goes as a good accompaniment for rotis or chapathis or phulkas.  This recipe is the dry version of the green peas subzi.  You can also use fresh or frozen green peas for making this subzi.  Green peas when mixed with spices makes up for a great side dish and bright green colour lights up the dish.

INGREDIENTS

Dried green peas – 1 and 1/2 cups

Onion – 1

Tomatoes – 2 (large sized)

Oil – 2 tablespoons

Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon

Cumin seeds or rai – 1/2 teaspoon

A pinch of asafoetida

Ginger-garlic paste – 1 teaspoon

Green chillies – 2 (chopped finely)

Few curry leaves

Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon

Red chilli powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Coriander powder – 1 teaspoon

Cumin powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Garam masala – 1/2 teaspoon

Lemon juice – 1 teaspoon

Salt to taste

Coriander leaves for garnishing – 2 tablespoons

HOW TO MAKE OR PREPARE DRIED GREEN PEAS SUBZI RECIPE

Wash and soak the dried green peas for 6-7 hours or overnight.  Next day drain the water. Add sufficient fresh water, turmeric powder and salt.

Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles or until cooked.   Switch off the flame and allow it to cool down.  Meanwhile heat oil in a pan.  Add mustard seeds and allow it to crackle.  Then add cumin seeds and saute till they turn light brown in colour.  Add  green chillies, chopped onion and curry leaves.

Then add chopped tomatoes and mix well.  Cook on a low to medium flame till the tomatoes become little soft.

Then add turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, red chilli powder and salt.  Mix well.

Add the boiled green peas and mix well again.

Add little water and mix.  Simmer on a low flame for 4-5 minutes.  Then add garam masala and mix well.  Switch off the flame.  Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

Delicious dried green peas subzi is ready to be served.  Serve with rotis or chapathis or as an accompaniment for dal rice.

NOTES/TIPS

You can add little amchur powder for a tangy taste to the subzi.

Adjust the consistency as required by you.

Ensure the green peas are well cooked but not too mushy.
