Palak tofu / spinach tofu recipe – How to make tofu in spinach gravy recipe – palak recipes

Palak tofu is a healthy vegan dish made with spinach puree and tofu. Palak paneer is one of the most popular North Indian dish and is available easily in most of the restaurants in  India. Palak tofu is very similar to palak paneer.  But here only paneer is replaced by tofu and cooked in spinach gravy.  Tofu goes well with spinach and it is a complete vegan recipe.  Do try this recipe and enjoy with rotis, naans, fried rice or pulao or any flavoured rice.

Indian cuisine

INGREDIENTS

Spinach or palak puree – 2 cups (made from 1 medium bunch of palak leaves)

Tofu – 200 gms

Onion – 1 (chopped finely)

Green chillies – 2 (chopped finely)

Garlic cloves – 5 (chopped finely)

Ginger or adrak – 1 inch sized (chopped finely)

Cooking oil – 4 tablespoons

Cumin seeds or jeera – 1 teaspoon

Red chilli powder – 1/2 teaspoon (optional)

Garam masala – 1/2 teaspoon

Salt to taste

HOW TO MAKE OR PREPARE PALAK TOFU RECIPE

Wash the spinach leaves thoroughly with running water.  Chop the leaves roughly and keep it aside.

Heat enough water in a pan. Add salt to the water.  When the water comes to a boil, reduce the flame and add the palak leaves.  Close the pan with a lid and cook on a low flame for 2-3 minutes.

Strain the palak leaves and add them to a grinder or a blender and grind them to a smooth paste or puree.  Keep the puree aside.

Chop the tofu into equal pieces.  Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan on medium flame.  Add the tofu pieces.

Saute the tofu pieces till light brown in colour.  Set aside.  Add another 2 tablespoons of oil.  Add cumin seeds and allow them to splutter.

Add chopped garlic cloves and ginger and saute till the raw smell of the garlic goes away.  Add chopped onions and green chillies and cook till the onions become translucent.

Add the spinach puree and salt. Mix well.

Add red chilli powder and garam masala.  Stir very well.  Finally add the lighly fried tofu pieces and stir gently. Simmer on a low flame for a minute.  Then switch off the flame.

Delicious and healthy palak tofu is ready to be served. Serve tofu palak hot with rotis, chapathis, naan or any flavoured rice.

NOTES/TIPS

Add milk cream to bring a creaminess and richness to the gravy.

You can use the same recipe for making palak paneer.  Replace tofu with paneer pieces.
