Raw banana thoran or raw banana curry recipe

Raw banana thoran or curry is a simple and easy to make South Indian curry recipe made with raw bananas and is best enjoyed with rice or rotis.  It is called as thoran in Kerala and a very popular dish in their cuisine.  The raw bananas are boiled and then stir fried with coconut masala and seasoned with mustard seeds and curry leaves.

INGREDIENTS

Raw bananas – 2

Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon

Salt to taste

TO GRIND

Grated coconut – 1/4 cup

Cumin seeds (jeera) – 1 teaspoon

Green chillies – 3-4

Garlic cloves -4

FOR SEASONING

Cooking oil – 2 tablespoons

Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon

Chana dal – 1 teaspoon

Urad dal – 1 teaspoon

Red chillies – 2

A pinch of asafoetida

Few curry leaves

HOW TO MAKE OR PREPARE RAW BANANA THORAN OR CURRY RECIPE

Peel the raw bananas and chop them into small  equal pieces and immerse them in water.

Cook the cubed raw bananas in water with salt and turmeric powder added to it and till they are cooked.  Once cooked, drain the water and set aside.

Grind grated coconut, cumin seeds, green chillies and garlic cloves with little water to make a smooth paste.

Heat oil in a pan.  Add mustard seeds.  Once mustard seeds start spluttering, add chana dal, urad dal, red chillies, asafoetida and curry leaves and saute for a minute.  Add boiled raw banana pieces, coconut mixture and salt and cook for another 4-5 minutes on a low flame, till the raw bananas are well coated with the ground paste.

Switch off the flame and remove the thoran in a serving bowl.

Serve raw banana thoran or curry hot with rice or rotis.
