Tomato dosa recipe

Tomato dosa or thakkali dosa is a very nutritious and  yummy dosa made with rice and tomatoes which are the main ingredients and which is an ideal breakfast to start your day..  It requires no fermentation and can be prepared quickly.  Tomato dosa is a healthy and tangy version of dosa recipe.  I have prepared using raw rice, but if you want instant dosa, you can use rice flour which is easily available in the market and make it instantly.

Prep Time : 3-4 hours

Cook Time : 20 mins

Yield : 10 dosas

South Indian snack

Raw rice – 1 cup

Tomatoes – 4 (roughly chopped)

Green chillies – 2

Chopped coriander leaves – 2 tablespoons

Salt to taste

Oil for making dosas

Oil – 1 tablespoon

Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon

Cumin seeds – 1/2 teaspoon

Split urad dal – 1/2 teaspoon

Few curry leaves

Wash the rice thoroughly and soak it in water for 3-4 hours.  Then drain the water completely.  Take a mixer grinder and add the rice, chopped tomatoes and green chillies and grind to a nice smooth paste by adding little water.

Remove the batter in a bowl.  Add salt and mix well.

Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan.  Add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter.  Then add cumin seeds, urad dal and curry leaves and saute till the dals turn golden brown.

Pour the seasoning to the batter.  Finally add chopped coriander leaves to the batter and mix well.

Heat a tawa on a medium flame.  When the tawa becomes hot, pour a ladle of tomato dosa  batter to the tawa and spread the dosa to a medium circle by spreading the batter evenly. Put 1 tsp of oil on the top and around the dosa and cook for a minute on a medium flame. Once the dosa turns golden and crisp, flip on the other side and cook for half a minute.  Continue with the same method for the remaining batter.

Serve tomato dosa hot with sambar or coconut chutney.

  • You can add red chilli powder instead of green chillies.
  • Add chopped onions for enhanced taste and flavour.
