Masala idli recipe – How to make masala idli recipe – breakfast recipes

Masala idli is a quick  South Indian snack recipe made with idlis, onions, tomatoes and mixed with spices.  It makes up for a great meal for lunch box too.  Masala idli is not only a healthy and delicious breakfast dish, but also a good twist to the regular plain idli.  There are variety of recipes that can be made with idlis like idli upma, kaima idli, idli manchurian and so on.  Masala idli is one such recipe that can be tried easily at home with fresh as well as leftover idlis.

Indian cuisine

INGREDIENTS

Idlis – 4 (medium sized)

Onion – 1 (chopped finely)

Tomatoes – 2 (chopped finely)

Green chillies – 2 (chopped finely)

Ginger-garlic paste – 1/2 teaspoon

Red chilli powder – 1/4 teaspoon

Coriander powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Garam masala – 1/2 teaspoon

Tomato ketchup – 1 tablespoon (optional)

Oil – 2 tablespoons

Mustard seeds (rai) – 1/2 teaspoon

Cumin seeds (jeera) – 1/2 teaspoon

Salt to taste

Curry leaves – 10

Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing

HOW TO MAKE OR PREPARE MASALA IDLI RECIPE

Chop the idlis into equal sized pieces and keep it aside.

Heat oil in a pan on medium flame.   Add the mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.  Once it stops spluttering, add cumin seeds and stir fry till they turn light brown in colour.   Add chopped onions and saute till they become translucent.  Then add ginger-garlic paste and curry leaves.  Saute till the raw smell of the ginger-garlic goes away.

Add chopped tomatoes and cook till they become soft.  Then add red chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala and salt,  Mix well.

Sprinkle little water and mix the spices well with the mixture.  Then add chopped idlis and mix very well.  Add tomato ketchup and mix again.

Once the mixture is well absorbed by the idlis and  become moist and soft,  switch off the flame.  Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.

NOTES/TIPS

You can also use mini idlis instead of regular idlis.  In that case, you need not chop them.

You can add pav bhaji masala instead of garam masala.  It gives a different and good flavour to the idlis.
